Allocating a B2B paid budget across three channels

A role-based way to split a B2B paid budget across search, professional social and retargeting, with the metric each role should be judged on and the failure mode of judging them all the same way.

Most B2B budget arguments are really measurement arguments: three channels doing three different jobs are being held to one number.

## Give each channel a job and a metric

Search is judged on cost per qualified enquiry, because the demand already exists. Professional social is judged on new accounts entering the pipeline, not on last-click enquiries. Retargeting is judged on assisted progression, and should be capped rather than optimised.

## Rebalance on pipeline, not on cost per click

Review quarterly against pipeline created by first-touch channel and against the incrementality range you have measured. Anything reviewed weekly on cost per click will drift toward retargeting, because retargeting always wins that particular contest.
